NEVERMORE EVERLESS
I reached the scooter stand just before the final bell rang. I peeled away my helmet, dumped it in the boot of my scooter and bolted towards the main entrance making it just in time. I held onto the strap of my bag as I walked through the crowded corridors of the school. I could hear my footsteps echoing even though many students were there bustling about, laughter accompanying them.
I navigated my way past them in a hurry to get into the classroom before the teacher arrived. I entered the classroom and my peers said 'Fancy seeing you all cheery in the morning. Must've been a great morning!' with a smirk on their faces. 'It really was a great morning and it is going to be a great day too!' my voice felt lighter than usual as my words slipped out of my mouth faster than I had anticipated. I then turned and went to my desk before they could shoot me with questions I couldn't answer and let my bag thud on the floor next to it. I left my classroom and walked towards the one adjacent to mine. I entered it and scanned the classroom through my transparent framed glasses that rested on my nose adding a yellowish tint to everything that I would see, for my friend, RG but she wasn't there yet. I went back to my class and sat on my desk, then, snatched my bag from the ground, opened the innermost pocket of my bag and drew out my phone cautiously checking my surroundings first. I made sure that my phone was on silent before I proceeded with anything. Then I opened his chat again, this would be the last time, I told myself; 'Same spot' I snuck a peak at those words again, so casual yet so.....well, wow. A mischievous smile crept across my face causing a dimple to appear on my right cheek.
...................................................................
The day felt stretched out. Every class felt a lifetime long and I just could not wait to go meet him. I kept trying to focus in class but it felt as if my thoughts were not in straight lines anymore, they were floating away as if I no longer had control over them. I sat with my face buried in the palm of one of my hands shielding my eyes with my fingers to block out the scrutiny of the teacher standing before me going on about The Constitution of India. Physically, I was sitting in class next to AV but mentally I was in our spot with him. I was scribbling on my book with my other hand and before I knew it, I found myself writing 'Same spot' in different fonts and drawing smileys next to them.
After what felt like a lifetime, the dismissal bell rang. I packed my back and waited for my friends to do the same. We shouldered our bags and walked past the same corridor that I had walked through earlier. We headed to the scooter stand together and I bid AV and CS goodbye as we had to go in opposite directions. I plugged in my right Airdope, wore my helmet, mounted my ride, Zippy, as I liked to call it, and speeded down the empty roads of the cantonment; speeding up on the speed bumps instead of slowing down. The guard told me to slow down as I defied gravity flying over one of the speed bumps for a split second. I indicated left and turned onto one of the most dangerous roads to be riding on.
This road would lead straight to my house. I revved Zippy. My gaze dropped to the speedometer, the red needle hovering just above 70. I thought to myself 'Am I going a bit fast for a single-lane road?' and my mind did it again, my thoughts floated away from me as if they were no longer mine and I was trapped in the moment I was in a few minutes ago yet the scenery around me changed rapidly. I saw a white Swift Dezire slowing down. Its red brake lights shone in my eyes and I tried to bring myself back into the moment but I just couldn't do it. I was too detached from reality for that, my mind kilometres away from where I really was. My fingers wouldn't move. They wouldn't move to the brakes, they wouldn't apply them. The car was rapidly growing in size. Was it growing bigger to consume me and my little blue Zippy? Or was I moving closer to it?
The world was muted and I was not moving even though I knew that I had to. I had to bring myself back to this world, to reality and do something. Then suddenly a loud noise snapped me back to reality. It sounded as if there was a collision of two vehicles.
Suddenly, I was lying somewhere...somewhere hard and something was running down the back of my head, I could feel it reaching the back of my neck. What was happening? I felt my eyelids getting heavier, the world seemed like an empty canvas. It was of pale blue colour. A moment later, it wasn't pale anymore. Some random hues were being splashed on it. But with what? And what was this colour called? Does colour spread like ink bleeding through a thin sheet of paper on a canvas like that? I should know, I paint; but I didn't.
My eyelids grew even heavier and I surrendered to sleep. Maybe this was all just a dream and I'll wake up with the smell of freshly made dosas and to the sound of my mother singing in her soft voice along with the Google Home - a normal Sunday morning.
